I'm Teaching Genetics

In this section you will find a range of resources for teaching, from complete lesson plans to individual teaching slides.

The menu on the left will help you to identify the resources most appropriate to your needs and those of your students. If you are experienced in teaching genetics you may simply be looking for new scenarios, slides or resources. If you are not so experienced you may find the structured lesson plans helpful.

Supporting Healthcare Educators

educationAs the applications of genetic and genomic technology in clinical practice are increasing, so too is the need for health professionals to learn about the genetics and genomics relevant to their clinical practice.  The Human Genomics Strategy Group confirmed the importance of supporting healthcare educators in meeting this increasing demand.

Building on our inheritance: genomic technology in healthcare

This report, published by the Human Genomics Strategy Group in January 2012, sets out a strategic vision for how the healthcare system in the UK – and particularly in the NHS – can benefit from the mainstream adoption of genomic technology. It also provides specific recommendations on the steps that need to be taken to realise this vision.

Specialist Competences for Genetics and Genomics

The sessions are based on the outcomes of our work to develop learning outcomes and clinical competences in genetics and genomics. There are currently specific learning outcomes available for medical students, non-genetics specialist registrars and registrars in general practice. For other healthcare professionals, we have developed learning outcomes for specific clinical activities, our Genetics Activities in Clinical Practice.

It would not be possible for us to cover every teaching situation or student group so within some sections we have made suggestions as to how you might adapt the session for different student groups.

Continuum of Genetics Education

Education in genetics needs to be a continuing process, not least to embrace new advances. The Centre has therefore identified, developed and supported a continuum of genetics education within health professional education. The continuum links the learning outcomes covering core genetics concepts in pre-registration health professional training to the genetics activities a health professional may carry out in clinical practice.

We are still developing a number of resources, such as e-learning modules which, in the future you may wish to include as pre-session work or post session consolidation. If you feel that there are some specific resources that you would find helpful please contact us and we will try to assist.
