Until relatively recently it was commonly thought that identifying that someone had a genetic condition was unlikely to change management - apart from being able to give the family information about inheritance of the condition. Much more is now possible. Information for patients about genetic conditions is increasingly available. A genetic test may be clinically helpful and assist management. Treatment for some genetic conditions – using targeted therapy – is becoming available.
