Service Development Initiatives - Mainstreaming Genetics

General Practitioners with Special Interest in Genetics (GPwSI)

The government's genetics white paper included start-up funding for up to ten GPs with a special interest in genetics. The successful projects were announced on 14th March 2005.

These projects explored ways to develop the capacity and capability for providing genetic-based health care in primary care by building on routine procedures and core skills already existing in general practice. They involved providing local clinical leadership; liaising between primary care, public health, secondary care, specialist genetics services, Workforce Development Confederations and local user groups; commissioning; education and training; and developing clinical roles.

A list of GPwSI Genetics projects is available from the Department of Health website.

The National Genetics Education and Development Centre worked with the GPs with a special interest in genetics to:

  • provide educational development support and
  • provide support to the PCTs and practitioners in the service development aspects of the role and facilitate shared learning between projects.

A Competence Framework for GPwSI Genetics

The Centre collaborated with the GPwSIs to develop a competence framework for GPwSI Genetics. The competence framework presents core competences (at and after appointment) for all GPs with a special interest in genetics as well as suggesting additional competences for specific roles.
