Service Development Projects

The Department of Health (DH) funded 10 projects across England to develop innovative models which integrate genetics into NHS services and the NHS National Genetics Education and Development Centre had a key role to support the projects.

Information on the outcomes from these projects has been collated to provide a ' Toolkit'  for future development initiatives to ensure the subsequent dissemination of resources and effective practice for the NHS.

This page provides information on the 10 DH funded projects including:

Background

Further information about the service areas of work the projects were based in and the health professional groups they worked with is available in The Service Development Projects booklet.

Events for service development projects

The Centre facilitated a support network by hosting and co-hosting events for the Service Development Projects.

The first meeting in April 2005 "Evaluation and Education - Mainstreaming Genetics" brought together representatives from all DH funded projects. Delegates identified priority areas for education and developmental work including resources. The Centre collated and developed information on resources and learning support materials to support health professionals developing services for genetics.

In direct response to colleagues from the projects a further meeting took place in January 2006, "Developing Services in Genetics - Business Cases, Commissioning, Patient and Public Involvement". The day focused on approaches to sustaining projects long-term and obtaining further funding.

A joint working meeting was held in autumn 2006 with Service Development Project staff, to capture the learning and formalise the experience gained from the projects. This informed the development of a 'Toolkit for Developing Services' to ensure the subsequent dissemination of resources and effective practice.
