Service Development Initiatives - Mainstreaming Genetics

External Evaluation

A team from the University of Nottingham has been funded by the Department of Health to support internal evaluators from the White Paper service development initiatives, and to analyse organisation and management structures and processes that underpin the effectiveness of genetics interventions.

The External Evaluation Team is based at the University of Nottingham's Institute for the Study of Genetics, Biorisks and Society (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/igbis). The University's Centre for Developing and Evaluating Lifelong Learning provided evaluation expertise and led the workshops for internal evaluators.

The evaluation work was divided into two stages (Autumn 2004 to Autumn 2008):

  • Stage 1 - support for the internal evaluators.
  • Stage 2 - an external evaluation of the factors that facilitate and impede the service reorganisation from a management perspective.

The University of Nottingham External Evaluation Team and the NHS National Genetics Education and Development Centre worked together collaboratively to support the projects; see our Joint Statement.
