Coronary artery disease is generally considered to show multifactorial inheritance and the risk to first degree relatives, that is, parents, children and siblings, is about 6 times that of the general population. Up to 10% of early coronary artery disease may be due to autosomal dominant familial hypercholesterolaemia and this should be excluded.
