Collecting, Recording and Interpreting Family History Information

 1. Why is family history information important to my practice?

"Collecting family histories is one useful way of determining possible genetic issues. I have found that my family members are very willing to talk about health issues in a constructive way. Recurring medical issues can be identified; both genetic and environmental factors may be considered."
(Graham's Story from 'Telling Stories - Understanding Real Life Genetics')

The importance of family history to patient care

Health professional Ann tells Telling Stories that a family history may make or break the diagnosis or inheritance pattern for that family, Helen says that her family were aware of a family history of relatives dying suddenly without any apparent cause.

Telling Stories Understanding Real life Genetics explores the impact and relevance of genetics on patient care through patient's and health professional's experiences and stories.  This multi media resource investigates the many different aspects of genetics affecting patients and health professionals including the importance of family history.
