Teaching Genetics

This section provides information and resources to those with the remit of providing education in genetics to health professionals.

What are the concepts in genetics that are important to my learners?

Education in genetics needs to be a continuing process, not the least to embrace new advances. The NHS National Genetics Education and Development Centre has therefore identified, developed and supported a continuum of genetics education within health professional education:

Knowledge into Action
The continuum links the learning outcomes covering core genetics concepts in pre-registration health professional training to the genetics activities a health professional may carry out in clinical practice.

For information about learning outcomes and competences for a specific health professional group and to access resources to support these, click on the tabs on the left.

For those non-genetics professionals who carry out genetics activities in practice, the UK Workforce Competences for Genetics in Clinical Practice have been developed. These can be used as a basis for developing learning outcomes relevant to a specific health professional group. These have already been developed for some professionals.

How can I make genetics interesting and relevant to my learners?

The NHS National Genetics Education and Development Centre has worked with experienced genetics educators to identify the features of effective genetics education. Click on each of the points below for more information:
