In this section you will find a range of resources for dietitians and educators, including clinical case scenarios, PowerPoint slides and animations:
Core Genetic Concepts The Centre has produced a number of PowerPoint Slide Packages explaining genetics concepts and conditions.
Taking and Drawing a Family History The Family History Series explains how to gather family history information and draw a pedigree.
Telling Stories Understanding Real Life Genetics The Telling Stories website contains stories of patients and health professionals relating to genetics and family history. For more information about why these stories may be of interest to dietitians visit 'Dietitians and Telling Stories'. Graham's Story: Like father, like son (myocardial infarction) is a good example of how family history information can be used to encourage diet and lifestyle changes in patients and families.
Genetic Testing, Family History and Common Conditions A series of US factsheets explain the relevance of family history information in conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Another sheet summarises the uses of genetic testing in health care.
Diabetes Heart disease Colorectal cancer Breast cancer Summary of Genetic Testing
Although nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics are intimately linked, their meanings and purpose are fundamentally different for understanding the relationship between diet and genes. A factsheet containing further information of examples of nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics research is under development.
The Centre worked with expert dietitians and educators in the UK and US to develop interactive Case Studies. This project is in collaboration with the US National Coalition for Health Professional Education in Genetics (NCHPEG).
