Chorionic Villus Sampling

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is a procedure  which takes samples of the cells of the placental chorionic villi.  The cells are used for chromosome, DNA or biochemical analysis for diagnosis of fetal disorders. The main advantage over amniocentesis is that the procedure can be carried out much earlier in pregnancy - at about 10 weeks.
