Teaching GP Specialty Registrars

This section is for those who teach genetics to general practice trainees.

Guidance on what to teach can be found in 'Genetics in Primary Care', statement six of the RCGP curriculum. This contains learning outcomes which describe what GP Specialty Registrars need to know about genetics for clinical general practice.

The learning outcomes in 'Genetics in Primary Care' reflect the three main themes of genetics in primary care practice: identifying patients with or at risk of a genetic condition; clinical management of genetic conditions and communicating genetic information, as shown in the diagram below. For more information download the summary of the curriculum statement

Identifying patients

These learning outcomes were developed by an expert panel convened by the Centre and the RCGP following an educational needs assessment. The learning outcomes in 'Genetics in Primary Care' build on the genetics learning outcomes for medical students, ensuring integrated genetics education between medical school and general practice training.

Supporting the RCGP curriculum statement on 'Genetics in Primary Care'

To support GP Associates in training, the Centre has developed a 'Genetics in Primary Care' webpage that has grouped together relevant resources under the three main themes of genetics in primary care practice.

The Centre also has experience in running half-day workshops for GP Specialty Registrars. Please contact the Centre if you are thinking of running workshops for GP trainees in your area and would like further information on suggested session plans and  resources useful for teaching 'Genetics in Primary Care'.
