Our pharmacogenetics education programme should be relevant to health professionals who are interested in the prescription or usage of drugs. This may include pharmacists, GPs, medical professionals, and nurses amongst others. Pharmacogenetics, the study of the effect of genes and heredity on drug response, has many applications which are already regularly used in clinical practice. Pharmacogenetics is used in the diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of conditions and can aid in choosing the right drug and optimising dosage. Additionally pharmacogenetics has a role in drug development and in gene and stem cell therapy.
The Centre supports pharmacogenetics education, by identifying and developing resources for pre-registration training, and continuing professional development for a range of practitioners.
Are you a health professional interested in the usage or prescription of drugs? Are you an educator interested in teaching about genetics and the application of new genomic science in clinical practice? If so you may be interested in downloading our series of Factsheets entitled "The Genomic Basis of Therapeutics".
Pharmacists and educators may be interested in our report, produced with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, "How will pharmacogenetics impact on pharmacy practice? Pharmacist's views and educational priorities".
These web pages have been updated to introduce pharmacogenetics to a range of health professionals and educators, and describe its impact on current clinical practice. The Centre welcomes feedback, comments or suggestions about these pages, resources or any aspect of genetics education for health professionals - please contact caroline.bradley@geneticseducation.nhs.uk
